Virtual to Real: A 3d printing Exhibition
BA Interactive Media Design / Digital Media Arts
University of Hertfordshire 2017
This project aimed to bring together students from different awards to create a multi-disciplinary exhibition. Students from 5 different courses in the school of the Creative Arts (Animation, Fashion, Fine Art, Jewellery and Graphic Design/Illustration) were asked to create an artwork in a Virtual Reality platform HTC Vive – using the Google Tilt Brush software. A selection of artworks were then 3d printed and displayed in an exhibition space in the school.
During this project, the students experienced an introduction to virtual reality – a tool which shows a lot of potential in the coming years from both a learning and teaching perspective as well as an industry tool. Furthermore, they experienced how their digital artwork can be fabricated and take a physical form and learn what it means to create an artwork for an exhibition. The logistics of the exhibitions were conducted by level 5 CMDC students, thus giving them the skills to be able to put together an exhibition, curate the work and collaborate with students from other disciplines. CMDC students were in charge for: learning how to use the VR system, transferring that knowledge to students from the other awards, decide which artworks will be 3d printed, set up the exhibition space, create a website hosting a catalogue of the printed artifacts and create a making-off documentary. This work was part of the teamwork practices module, and all work was done in teams. This project was engineered to give the students a taste of what it means to work for a deliverable which will be presented to an audience beyond their tutors.

For the Interactive Digital Art course, my learning objectives were to let the students experiment with interactive technologies (Kinect, arduino boards, touch surfaces), demonstrate the work of pioneer artists working in the area of digital and interactive art and introduce a number of concepts such as projection mapping, video tracking and generative art. Furthermore, by learning a node-based software (VVVV) the students had create a site specific interactive installation which will be presented somewhere in the university or in the city.
